There comes a moment when a suitcase lying open on the bed stops being just a suitcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You look at it and realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am actually leaving.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Until then, change can live somewhere safely in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You plan for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You dream about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You wonder when it will finally happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes you wait so long that waiting itself becomes part of your everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then, suddenly, the future arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It arrives with boxes and lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With folded clothes and half-empty cupboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With decisions about what stays and what goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that is when leaving becomes real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes the strangest part of a long-awaited change is discovering that happiness can feel overwhelming too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can spend months, even years, hoping for something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imagining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Waiting for the day when you can finally say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s happening.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n And then that day comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suddenly, the thing you wanted so badly feels almost too big to hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because you don’t want it anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But because yesterday it was a dream, and today it requires something from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Goodbyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Letting go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is so much to do that sometimes you don’t even know where to begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One minute you are excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next you want everything to stop for just a moment so you can catch up with your own heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps that is why our emotions become such a tangled little suitcase of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We want time to hurry up, and at exactly the same moment, we desperately want it to slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe we don’t have to untangle all of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe we are allowed to feel every bit of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because some of life’s biggest blessings don’t arrive quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes they arrive carrying an ending in one hand and a beginning in the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are the easy things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The clothes you haven’t worn in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The kitchen drawer filled with things nobody remembers buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The books you know you probably won’t read again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Donate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Give away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But then you find the things that don’t fit neatly into those little piles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A handwritten note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something that belonged to someone you loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A cup you have used for your morning coffee more times than you could ever count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suddenly, you aren’t deciding whether to keep an object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You are touching a memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that is when packing becomes something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because how do you pack a life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n How do you pack Sunday mornings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n How do you pack the familiar sound of your home at night?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tree outside the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The road you have driven a thousand times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The people who know your history without needing you to explain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ordinary little things you never thought you would miss because you never imagined there would come a day when they wouldn’t be ordinary anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can’t put those things into a suitcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps that is one of the hardest parts of leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We spend so much time thinking about where we are going that we sometimes forget to honour where we have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There will be last times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some we will know about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last time we close a particular door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But others will pass without announcing themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last ordinary morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last time you buy something from the familiar little shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last time you drive that road without thinking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last cup of coffee in your favourite spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The last sunset from a familiar window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And maybe that is why leaving can hurt even when we are leaving for something we desperately wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because a new beginning does not cancel the life that came before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were good days here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was laughter here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were meals around tables and conversations in kitchens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were birthdays and ordinary Tuesdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were mornings when everything felt possible and nights when everything felt far too heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were people we loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were dreams that grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were dreams that changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There were versions of ourselves who lived here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And leaving does not erase any of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe that is what I am learning while the boxes slowly fill around me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t have to choose between being grateful for what was and hopeful for what will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can be both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can be excited about a new beginning and still cry over an old one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can know that it is time to go and still wish you could somehow take pieces of yesterday with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can feel incredibly fortunate and completely overwhelmed at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can laugh in the morning and cry while packing a cupboard that afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of those feelings cancel the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They simply mean that what you are leaving mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps courage isn’t walking away without looking back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps courage is looking back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Really looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Remembering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Being grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Saying goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then turning toward what comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So if you are standing somewhere between an ending and a beginning today, please don’t rush yourself through the goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sit with it for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Walk through the rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Take the photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Have the coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Watch one more sunset from the place that has been home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Remember the ordinary things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One day, those may be the things you remember most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when the time finally comes to close the suitcase, remember this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n You are leaving many things behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But you are not leaving your whole life behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The most important pieces were never in the cupboards or hanging in the wardrobe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are already travelling with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The people you loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The lessons you learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The memories you made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The laughter you shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The difficult days you survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The strength you discovered when life asked more of you than you thought you could give.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Especially hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hope takes up no room at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So pack as much of
