You Don’t Have to Be Ready for the Next Chapter

There is something strange about waiting for your life to change.

You imagine the moment so many times.

You think about what it will feel like when the waiting is finally over. When the answer comes. When the door opens. When you can finally say, This is happening.

And somewhere along the way, you convince yourself that when that moment arrives, you will be ready.

Brave.

Excited.

Organised.

Perhaps even standing beside perfectly packed suitcases with a peaceful smile on your face.

But sometimes the door opens…

and you are still standing there in your pyjamas wondering where you packed the phone charger.

Life has a sense of humour like that.

Maybe We Never Feel Completely Ready

The truth is, some of the biggest changes in our lives don’t arrive when everything inside us is neatly sorted.

They arrive while we’re still trying to understand what we’re leaving behind.

You can be excited about where you’re going and heartbroken about what you’re leaving.

You can be grateful for a new beginning and still cry over an ending.

You can know that something is right and still be frightened by it.

You can have waited months, or even years, for something to happen and suddenly think:

Wait. Already?

That doesn’t mean you’ve changed your mind.

It doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful.

It simply means you’re human.

Our Hearts Pack Differently

We can put clothes into boxes.

We can wrap fragile things in paper.

We can sort cupboards into keepgive away and throw out.

If only our hearts worked the same way.

Imagine that.

Memories: Keep.
Fear: Throw out.
Courage: Hand luggage.
People we love: Definitely coming with us.
Things we cannot control: Leave behind.

Wouldn’t that make things easier?

But hearts don’t pack according to lists.

They carry strange little things.

The sound of a familiar gate opening.

A favourite chair.

A neighbour waving.

The way the light falls through a particular window in the afternoon.

A coffee mug you’ve used a thousand times.

A place at the table.

Ordinary things that suddenly don’t feel ordinary at all.

And perhaps that is why change can feel so overwhelming.

We’re not only packing belongings.

We’re trying to pack pieces of a life.

You Can Be Two Things at Once

One of the kindest things we can do for ourselves during a big change is stop demanding that we feel only one emotion.

You don’t have to choose between happy and sad.

You can be both.

You can be hopeful and scared.

You can be excited and exhausted.

You can look forward to tomorrow while still wanting to hold onto yesterday for just a little longer.

There is room for all of it.

A new beginning doesn’t erase everything that came before it.

It carries some of it forward.

The lessons.

The people.

The laughter.

The mistakes.

The memories.

The person you became while living that chapter.

You aren’t arriving at your next destination empty-handed.

You are bringing an entire life of becoming with you.

Maybe Courage Looks Different Than We Thought

We often imagine courage as something big.

Fearless people doing fearless things.

But I think courage is usually much quieter.

Sometimes courage is filling another box when you’re tired.

Sometimes it’s making the phone call you’ve been avoiding.

Sometimes it’s signing the paper.

Sometimes it’s saying goodbye.

Sometimes it’s admitting that you’re scared.

Sometimes it’s waking up tomorrow and continuing.

And sometimes…

courage is simply packing the suitcase anyway.

Not because you’re completely ready.

Not because you know exactly what comes next.

But because somewhere underneath all the noise and uncertainty, there is still a tiny piece of hope whispering:

Go.

You Can Become Ready Along the Way

Perhaps we’ve been thinking about readiness all wrong.

Maybe we don’t have to become completely ready before beginning.

Maybe beginning is part of becoming ready.

The first step teaches us something.

Then the next one.

And another.

Until one day we look behind us and realise that the terrifying unknown has slowly become our ordinary life.

There will be new routines.

New favourite places.

New people.

New coffee mugs.

New windows where the afternoon light falls differently.

And slowly, quietly, life will begin filling the empty spaces again.

Not replacing what came before.

Just growing around it.

So, If You’re Standing at the Door…

If you’re reading this while your own life is changing, please don’t wait for some magical moment when you suddenly feel completely prepared.

It may never come.

Take your memories.

Take your hope.

Take the people you love.

Take whatever courage you have, even if today it feels very small.

And take the next step.

You don’t need the whole map.

You don’t need all the answers.

You don’t even need to know exactly who you’ll be when you reach the other side.

You only need enough courage for the next little bit.

The rest can be unpacked later.

One box.

One breath.

One day.

One brave little step at a time.
