Sometimes you put everything you have into getting somewhere safe.
You tell your story.
You gather the documents.
You answer the questions.
You wait.
And somewhere along the way, you begin quietly imagining a different life.
Then a letter arrives.
Ineligible.
One word can carry an unbelievable amount of weight.
Over the past few days, many South Africans have received those letters. And behind every application number is a real person. A family. A suitcase that may already have been mentally packed. Plans whispered around dinner tables. A little bit of hope that had finally been allowed to grow.
If you received one of those letters, please remember this:
Being denied does not mean you failed.
It doesn’t mean your fears weren’t real.
It doesn’t mean you weren’t deserving of safety.
And it certainly doesn’t say anything about your worth as a human being.
Sometimes we can do everything we know how to do and still not get the answer we prayed for.
Maybe one day you will look back and understand why this particular door didn’t open. Maybe life was quietly turning you toward another road. Maybe something you cannot see yet is waiting further ahead.
Or maybe, right now, there simply isn’t an explanation.
And I think it’s okay to say that too.
I don’t have beautiful answers wrapped in ribbons today.
We are living with the same uncertainty. We know what it feels like to wait for an answer that could change everything. We know how exhausting the not-knowing can become.
So today, I’m not going to tell you to “just stay positive.”
I’m simply going to remind you that your story did not end when that letter arrived.
Be disappointed.
Cry if you need to.
Put the plans away for a day or two.
But don’t put away your hope.
There may be another country. Another opportunity. Another plan. Another door you haven’t even noticed yet.
You tried to build a safer future for yourself and the people you love.
There is no shame in that.
And wherever the road goes from here, perhaps we can keep walking it together.
One day at a time.
One little piece of courage at a time.
One suitcase at a time.
